1—Subject Introduction 

Subject Power Engineering and Engineering Thermalphysics derives from the combination of two basic subjects: Chemical Process Machinery and Thermal Engineering, which are founded in 1978 as the earliest subjects in School of Mechanical Engineering with a history of more than 30 years. In 2011, subject Power Engineering and Engineering Thermalphysics was awarded the 12th Plan key cultivating subject by Jiangsu Province. In 2000, the secondary subject Chemical Process Machinery was authorized as the key subject by Sinopec, while key construction subject by Jiangsu Education Department in 2006.The corresponding master’s degree authorization was achieved in 2003. Then the master’s degree authorization of subject Thermal Engineering was achieved in 2006. In 2010, subject Power Engineering was awarded project master’s degree and professional master’s degree authorization. With the great development, the subject system of the first-level subject has formed covering six second-level subjects: Engineering Thermal Physics, Thermal engineering, Chemical Process Machinery, Fluid Machinery, Power Machinery and Engineering and refrigeration and cryogenic engineering. The basic major of the subject Process Equipment and Control Engineering was approved of characteristic major of Jiangsu Province, selected as the national characteristic major construction point in 2010, and named key major of institutions of higher learning the 12th Plan in Jiangsu Province.

Catering to the great demand of national and regional economic and scientific development, the subject puts focus on the leading universalities research of relevant science field. Through 30 years of construction and development, the characteristic and internationally influential research orientation has formed. As the typical instance of solar energy technology and equipment research field, team of Ding Jianning professor has explored equipment system with core technology of polysilicon cold hydrogen production of special heating synthesis reactor, which realized the production of close-loop, lower cost and energy, high efficiency. The research has changed the the backwardness of the polysilicon production technology, raised the international competitiveness of the polysilicon production industry in China into the world's advanced level, which won the second prize of national scientific and technological progress in 2012. Research team of professor Wang Zhengwei has developed the efficient heat and mass transfer, energy conservation and environmental protection equipment technology that featured by chemical process intensification and  energy saving technology, solid waste incineration technology, cogeneration technology of heat pipe, heat pump and heat electricity, heat utilization technology for low temperature waste, high efficient combustion and pollutant control technology.  The research achievements, including the heat utilization device for the waste heat of thermal phosphoric acid process, Free of combustion technology for organic chemical waste incineration, MVR evaporation energy saving equipment, heat pipe exchanger and heat pipe waste heat boiler, have been put into practice in more than 50 large-scale petrochemical and 100 steel enterprises with great economic benefit brought in, and made great contribution for energy saving and emission reduction. In 2008, the typical technology of “Efficient use of heat of reaction by-product of the industrial steam thermal process phosphoric acid production” won the second prize of national technical invention. During the development of more than 30 years, a group of outstanding leaders of the subject emerged. For instance, professor Ding Jianning is named as director of the center for photovoltaic science and collaborative innovation and engineering of Jiangsu province, national-level member of “Pacesetter Project”, member with the fund of special allowance of the state council staff, first graded of “333 project” of Jiangsu province, excellent talents for the ministry of education in the new century, overall expert of energy theme project group in national “863 plan”. The faculty contains 3 doctoral supervisors, member of “Pacesetter Project”, new century excellent talents of education ministry, the 4th young scientific and technical leader of Jiangsu “333 Project”, which supports the echelon formation of old, medium and young talents with doctoral degree.

Since 2008, the subject has carried out 1 “863 Project”, 19 NSFC projects and 3 technology support plan (including the components), the total cash settlement reaches 100 million yuan. Moreover, honors has widely achieved, such as 1 second prize of national science and technology improvement, 1 second prize of national science and technology invention, 15 province/ministry science and technology improvement, more than 150 published papers indexed by SCI and EI, 12 published books, 50 authorized invention patents, five civil or international academic meetings hosted, etc.

The current predominant direction and research characteristics of this first-level subject completely conform to prior supporting areas and the focus of the medium and long-term science and technology development plan of state and Jiangsu province. For more than 30 years, the subject has made a significant contribution for the educational scientific research and national economic construction in fields of petroleum, chemical, energy, environment, power, refrigeration and military industry.
